WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's basketball team had eight players score in double figures as they cruised to an easy 124-47 victory over American Sports University on Day 1 of the Purple & Gold Poet Classic.

This marks the third time this season the Poets have hit the 100 point plateau (West Coast Baptist & Widener) and they now improve to 6-3, while American Sports University drops to 2-10.

All five Poet starters scored in double figures and as a team Whittier shot an astounding 56% from the field on 50-89 shooting.  The Purple & Gold led in every statistical category and one big category that stood out were points off turnovers as Whittier outscored American Sports 50-4.

American Sports University came into today's game with only six players and fatigue set in early as the Poets' run and gun offense put up 60 points in the first half behind a 22-7 run early.  But today's win was a team effort and even with the loss of two guard Willie Mebane, the Poets had Brandon Thomas fill in and make his first start of the season and he didn't disappoint as he finished with a game high 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting making it his season high.

Whittier's bench played significant minutes as they continued to pour on the points throughout this evening's contest and at one point getting up by almost 70.  Jacob Porter and Tyree Landrum sparked the Poets off the bench as they each finished with 15 and 14 points, each respectively, while Tyler Hagan finished with a career high 11 points and five boards in 17 minutes of action.

Junior Jordan Ramos despite not hitting double digits helped the Poets finish with a combined 30 assists as he finished the game with four points and a game and season high nine assists.

Senior Nathaniel Easterman had yet another impressive stat line as he finished again in double figures with 16 points to go along with four assists, four steals, and seven boards.

The Purple & Gold look to piggy back off this win as they now turn their sights on the Purple & Gold Championship Game that will take place tomorrow evening beginning at 8pm where they will take on the Keelhaulers of CSU Maritime who rolled to a tight 69-61 victory over UC Santa Cruz.
