WHITTIER, Calif. – Senior guard Louis Kurihara (Culver City, Calif.) was recognized as the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week announced Monday by the conference office in the 10th week of voting.
He is the second Poet to earn this recognition this year as Eric Davis (Ventura, Calif.) received accolades back on December 11.
Kurihara directed Whittier to a pair of pivotal SCIAC wins during the week, notching a 78-76 win over Caltech, before he helped the Poets edge Redlands, 93-92. Kurihara averaged 14 points per game with 13 coming against the Beavers and 15 against the Bulldogs. He shot 44% from the field including 50% from behind the arc, while going 86% from the charity stripe. Against Redlands, he hit the game-tying bucket with 11 seconds to play before draining a game-winning three-pointer after the Bulldogs had regained the lead to lift the Poets to the win.
The game-winning bucket is being called "The Shot" across campus as he drained one of the biggest baskets in program history, while being fouled at the same time.
