WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Basketball team used a big second half Wednesday night to top the University of La Verne 88-76.
The Purple & Gold take the sweep on the season over La Verne and averaged 100.5 PPG against the Leos. The Poets have now won two straight and improve to 8-12, 5-6 SCIAC. They currently sit 5th in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.
Conner Longmire (Tarzana, Calif.) went off and led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Kenyatta Louder (Compton, Calif.) came off the bench to add 12 points and eight boards and Kyle Price (Rocklin, Calif.) put up a 10-point effort with three rebounds. Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) added nine points and eight boards for a solid performance and Nolan Black (Olympia, WA) registered nine points with a block and five rebounds.
Whittier shot 45.3% from the field and 37.5% from behind the arc. They were too much inside for the Leos outrebounding 40-28 and winning the battle in the paint 44-34. The Poets also earned 18 points off turnovers and 15 second chance points.
The lone lead for La Verne came at the 15:20 mark in the first half when they led 9-8 following a Sinai Enoch three-pointer. But that quickly went away as WC put together a 10-2 run with seven of them coming from Longmire that gave them an 18-11 lead.
La Verne stayed within single digits in the first half, giving the Poets some pushback. They pulled within four at 28-24 with 5:28 to play, but again Whittier was able to stretch that back to double digits following six in a row. The Leos put up 12 points over the final 3:05 to get within five but as time expired before the half, Longmire connected from deep moving the score to 44-36.
A combined 84 points were put up in the second half with Whittier holding the edge 44-40. They led by as many as 15 late in the second but in the early stages, ULV put together some pressure getting within three on four different occasions. WC got some space when they strung together eight in a row midway through. At the 9:43 mark La Verne was able to get within three again at 63-60 but that would be the closest they would get as the Purple & Gold would pull away.
Whittier travels this Saturday, February 2 for a big match-up with Caltech beginning at 4:30pm.
