WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College golf team continues to impress this season as they again for the second straight event finished in front of the No. 6 Stags of Claremont-M-S finishing 3rd with an overall score of 308.

But not only did the Poets finish in front of the nationally ranked Stags of CMS they also finished in front of No. 14 La Verne who took home the title at the SCIAC No. 2 event last week.

Whittier finished behind Cal Lutheran who finished with a score of 294, while Redlands took home the SCIAC No. 3 Title with a score of 292.

To round out the rest of the field:

No. 4: La Verne (309)
No. 5: Claremont-M-S (311)
No. 6: Occidental College (321)
No. 7: Chapman University (322)
No. 8: Pomona-Pitzer (336)

Three Whittier players scored under 80 including senior Andrew Moreno-Hunt who led the Poets finishing 6th with a score of 74 shooting a 39 on the front nine and then an astounding 35 on the back nine shooting +3 for the day.

Senior transfer Matt Liotta-Butterworth followed right behind in 8th with a score of 75 shooting a 36 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine shooting +4.

Senior transfer Doug Kennedy had a superb day as well shooting 76 on the day shooting a 41 on the front nine and then hitting a big birdie on hole 10 to help him shoot a 35 on the back nine.

The Purple & Gold would have had a chance to move up higher in the final standings but junior Greg Garcia who had finished 5th in last week's SCIAC No. 2 event started off slowly hitting back to back triple bogey's on holes 1 and 2 that made it very difficult for him to bounce back from.  He finished in 44th with a score of 86 shooting a 49 on the front nine and then a 37 on the back nine.

The Purple & Gold continue to seek their first National Ranking this season especially after defeating the No. 6 Stags in back to back weeks as well as the Leopards of La Verne but will look to continue playing strong golf as they prepare for the St. Patty's Tournament taking place at Tukwet in Riverside, Calif. next Saturday, March 17 beginning at 12:00pm.
