IRVING, TX – The Whittier College men's lacrosse team closed out their trip to Texas with a win over Trine University Sunday afternoon 10-8 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Two days after powering past Southwestern University 14-2, the Poets used a 4-0 run early against Trine to hold onto the two goal victory.
In the first quarter Sam Russell got the scoring started for both programs as he put the Poets up 1-0. In the second Whittier added to their lead adding three quick goals from Tommy Andrews, Foster Cunningham, and Daniel McQuade to move the score to 4-0. After Trine added two goals to cut the lead to two Hunter Hall added a goal on a man advantage situation that put the Poets up 5-2 going into the half.
Coming out of the break Trine opened up the third quarter with a 4-0 run capped off by an Eric Thompson goal on a man up situation that put Trine up 6-5 gaining their first lead of the contest. But Whittier continued to battle as Cunningham and Russell each added goals to close out the quarter putting the Poets back up 7-6.
In the fourth, Cunningham added his third goal of the contest at the 11:52 mark off of a missed shot from Stephen Fay that put Whittier up 8-6. Then Russell and Cunningham each added goals midway through the quarter to put the Poets up four with 3:00 to play.
But Trine again answered back as they rattled off back to back goals to pull within two at 10-8 but that would be all they could muster as Chad Kelsey won the ensuing faceoff, which was grabbed by Max Myrick that ultimately led to the Poets preserving the two goal win.
Robert Bazlen played between the pipes for the Poets and finished with 15 saves. Cunningham led all scorers with four goals on six shots, while Russell finished with three goals on eight shots, two assists, while grabbing two ground balls.
Whittier returns to the field as they begin preparing for a matchup where they will host Gordon in their home opener on March 12 beginning at 4pm.
