Whittier opens up spring break with 15-7 victory over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, PA. – The Whittier College men's lacrosse team won their fifth game cruising to a 15-7 victory over Swarthmore on day one of their spring break trip.

Whittier improves to 5-1, while Swarthmore drops to 4-4.

The Poets who were coming off of a tough loss to Union (NY) bounced back from an early 3-0 deficit in the first quarter to score seven unanswered in the second to go into the half up 7-4. 

After going down 3-0 in the first Whittier scored five unanswered in the second from Daniel McQuade (2), Kevin Looney, Foster Cunningham, and Sam Russell  that put Whittier up 5-3 with two minutes to go.   After a quick goal from Steve Selverian that got Swarthmore within one Whittier tacked on two within the final minute of the first half from Danny Prevedel and McQuade that extended the Whittier lead to 7-4 at the break.

Coming out of the break, Whittier added the first two goals from Hunter Hall and McQuade that moved the lead to 9-4 but saw Ian Lukaszewicz stop the run with a goal for Swarthmore.  Then with seven seconds left to go in the third McQuade added his fifth goal of the game that pushed the Poet lead to 10-5.

In the final frame, Whittier added another two quick goals from Looney and Hall that pushed the lead to 12-5 but saw two unanswered from Swarthmore pull the Garnets within five.  But Whittier didn't go away as Mike Neumayr added his first goal of the game on a man up situation followed by a goal from Eric Omri and Neumayr once more. 

Robert Bazlen started between the pipes for the Poets and finished with 14 saves on 19 shots. 

Whittier continues their spring break as they take on Elizabethtown Tuesday afternoon, March 27 beginning at 4:00pm.
