SCIAC names five Poets to all-conference team

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2009 all-conference team and five Poets were honored which includes Adolfo Santos and DJ Covarrubias who were named to the first-team at forward and midfield, respectively.
Santos played in and started 17 games for Whittier and was second on the team with six goals. He also added a team-high six assists and was tied for the team lead in total points with 18. The sophomore forward totaled a season-high two goals against Cal Lutheran on September 26 in a 5-4 win and had a season-high two assists against Caltech on October 28.
Covarrubias played in 17 games and made 15 starts. He ranked third on the team in total points (14), third in goals (5) and second in assists (4). He scored goals against Caltech on October 3, Occidental on October 7, Cal Lutheran on October 21 and Caltech on October 28.
The junior captain went 3-for-4 on penalty kicks in 2009 and finished the year with a .152 shooting percentage.
The team's leading goal scorer, Srdan Jovanovic, earned second-team conference honors at forward. He scored nine goals which includes three against Caltech on October 3 and two against La Verne on October 17.
The freshman forward tallied game winning goals against Redlands on September 16, La Verne on October 17 and Cal Lutheran on October 21. He also scored in the waning minutes of Whittier's SCIAC tournament game to force overtime with Redlands.
The Poets' defense had the final two all-conference honorees as senior goalie Michael Read and junior defender Brendan McWalters earned second-team recognition. The defense held team's to just a .087 shooting percentage and 1.39 goals per game.
Read logged over 1113 minutes and made 50 saves while surrendering just 13 goals. He finished the year with an 8-2-2 record and recorded one shutout as he earned second-team all-conference recognition.
McWalters played in and started 17 games.
The Poets finished the season second in the conference and earned the No. 2 seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. Whittier fell in overtime to Redlands but saw its SCIAC win total increase from two wins in 2008 to eight wins in 2009.
