WHITTIER, Calif. – For the third time in as many outings the Whittier College men's soccer team kept a clean sheet as it extended its SCIAC regular-season unbeaten streak to 15 games behind a 4-0 win over Caltech on Saturday evening.
The Poets (5-2-1, 3-0-1 SCIAC) dominated the game statistically outshooting the Beavers 25-5 for the game. WC limited the Beavers to just one shot in the first 45 minutes.
Whittier went up 1-0 in the 11th minute off a corner. Patricio Carregha knocked the ball into the box where Joshua Dredge played a first touch header to Ian Cromwell who put away the eventual game winner.
The goal was the second of the season for Cromwell.
Adolfo Santos extended the Whittier lead to 2-0 at 37:57 with his third goal of the season. Jorge Figueroa started the counter attack and centered the ball to Santos who took care of the rest.
Santos and Figueroa were at it again in the 55th minute but this time it was the freshman who added to the Poets' advantage. Santos found Figueroa on a thru ball to make the score 3-0.
The final goal of the game came from Sam Russell who finished a cross from Kevin Hartsough at 64:04.
Taylor Ayres started the game in net and played the first 45 minutes. He wasn't tested but still recorded his third win of the season. David Diaz played the second half and stopped the only shot Caltech put on goal.
For the season, the defense and keepers have held five teams without a goal.
The Poets return to action on Wednesday, September 29, as they travel to Los Angeles, Calif., to face Occidental at 4 pm. The Tigers are currently 3-1 in the conference and hold wins over Caltech, Claremont-M-S and Pomona-Pitzer.
