Whittier gets back to winning ways, downs Caltech 3-0

PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College men's soccer team returned to its winning ways on Wednesday evening as it rolled to a 3-0 win over Caltech in SCIAC action.

Thomas Barber gave the Poets (8-6-1, 6-4-1 SCIAC) a lead they would not relinquish at the 3:03 mark of the first half. The eventual game winner came on a cross from Patricio Carregha. Barber finished the cross from Carregha to the near post.

Whittier took a 1-0 lead into the intermission and quickly doubled its advantage just 1:45 into the second 45 minutes. The Poets won an early corner and Francis Maxwell finished the feed from Adolfo Santos at 46:45.

Maxwell was at it again at 68:55, this time finishing a cross from Srdan Jovanovic.

The Poets outshot Caltech (1-12, 1-10 SCIAC) 20-8 for the game despite coming away with one less corner than the Beavers (6-5).

David Diaz started in goal for the Poets and made four saves in the win. Taylor Ayres saw just over 15 minutes of action and made one save in helping to keep the clean sheet for the purple and gold.

Maxwell finished the game with seven shots, five on goal, while Santos, Barber, Jovanovic and Sam Russell all had two shots for the Poets.

The Poets will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Occidental at 1 pm. The Tigers defeated the Poets in double overtime on Monday after.

Currently, Whittier holds a half game lead for third place over Occidental in the SCIAC standings.
