Whittier, Calif. – The Whittier College men's soccer team got their 2011 season underway as they opened up against nationally ranked Vanguard University who is No. 4 in the NAIA.
Right from the get go the Poets seemed nervous as the Lions answered immediately in the third minute of the game with a goal by Jack Plummer who dribbled through the defenders and rolled the ball into the lower right part of the net to go up 1-0.
Thirteen minutes later the Lions answered yet again with another goal by Kyle O'Brien who took a shot from twenty yards out to put the Lions up 2-0.
As the half continued the Poets began settling down and they began getting better looks at the goal but they were unable to cut away at the 2-0 lead of the Lions.
As the second half got underway, the Poets began attacking more frequently and the defense became tougher as the Poets shut down the Lions offensive attack.
But even with the more improved play, the Poets were still outshot 16-7 and despite having five corner kicks the Poets were unable to convert as they only managed two shots on goal by senior Patricio Carregha and junior Adolfo Santos.
"Overall, the team played very well, especially against such a good team like Vanguard and I feel they turned some heads tonight. This is a good game to learn from in order to be better prepared for the games that lie ahead," Coach Harwell explained.
The purple and gold return to action as they travel to take on the Eagles of Biola University, Monday September 5 beginning at 7pm.
