CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team spoiled the senior day of the Stags of Claremont-M-S Saturday night as they used a first half goal to pull off the shutout 1-0.
With the win the Poets complete the sweep over CMS on the season the first time this has occurred in program history. Since 2006 the Poets are 5-14-2 against the Stags during the regular season.
The Purple & Gold notched the game-winning goal in the 44th minute on a breakaway goal from Alejandro Trujillo (Buena Park, Calif.) who had a 1v1 with Stag keeper Grant Gilchrist.
It was a contested ball in the midfield. After a collision at the midfield stripe, the ball scooted forward to Trujillo on the right side. Trujillo broke away from his defender and slotted a shot past Gilchrist to give the Poets a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
Whittier jumped all over the Stags within the first ten minutes grabbing two corner kicks and two shots on goal. But CMS managed to weather that storm and would control the tempo from there outshooting Whittier for the game 15-10, while holding the edge on corner kicks 6-4.
William Allgeier (Brea, Calif.) played the entire game between the posts and collected the shutout along with three saves.
Trujillo led the offense with four shots, while Matt Slee (Bothell, WA) registered three.
Whittier (4-9, 4-8 SCIAC) has two home games remaining on the schedule this week beginning with La Verne this Wednesday, October 25 beginning at 7:00pm. Senior Day will occur this Saturday, October 28 against Cal Lutheran University beginning at 5:00pm.
