LA MIRADA, Calif. - In a match that required three dates and two days to complete, the Whittier College men's tennis team took five of six singles matches to clinch a 7-2 win over Biola University on Wednesday afternoon.
The match was originally scheduled for Friday, February 5, but was washed out and rescheduled for Tuesday, February 9. The Poets were able to win two of three doubles matches on Tuesday afternoon before Mother Nature postponed the rest of the match.
The Poets and Eagles resumed play this afternoon and Whittier picked up two quick wins at No. 6 and No. 2 singles before it ended the day with three straight singles wins to earn the victory.
Frank Sun remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-3, 6-0, win at the six spot, Julian Seneviratne picked up a 6-2, 6-3, win at No. 2 singles, Patricio Carregha earned a 7-5, 6-4 win at the top singles slot, Gavin Smith won in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 5 and it was Justin DeLong who officially clinched the match at No. 4 singles.
DeLong won the first set 6-3 but face a 5-2 deficit in the second set before running off five straight games to pull out the match 6-3, 7-5.
Carregha and Seneviratne improved to 3-0 at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 in and Smith and Sun remained undefeated with an 8-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Whittier opens conference play this Saturday at No. 29 Pomona-Pitzer at 9:30 am.
