WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's' tennis team completed their third match in a row and rounded out their ten match home stand with a clean sweep of the Loggers of Puget Sound Saturday afternoon at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
Whittier now improves to 8-4, while Puget Sound still seeks their first win of the season.
The Poets only needed two hours and used all eleven players to earn the 9-0 victory.
In doubles, the No. 2 team of Andrew Hansen and Chris Schommer made quick work of their opponents cruising to the 8-0 win, while at No. 1 Julian Seneviratne and Patricio Carregha stayed even early but pulled away late to earn the 8-4 win.
Plugged into the No. 3 slot was the senior duo of Taylor Dimler and Jonathan Pollare who got down early but fought their way back to earn the 8-4 victory as well helping Whittier enter singles play up 3-0.
Going into singles play Coach Lance Franey moved the lineup around moving Schommer up to No. 2, then putting Pollare into the No. 3 slot, David De Leon into No. 4, Samuel Granberry into No. 5, and Charlie Wyatt into No. 6.
Even with the move the Poets still dominated in singles sweeping every match in straight sets except for Pollare who needed a third set to pull off the victory 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. At No. 1 Seneviratne continues to impress as he moves his singles record to 9-2 cruising to the 6-0, 6-2 win, while Schommer jumped up a spot but still used penetrating groundstrokes and precision volleys to steamroll through his opponent 6-2, 6-0.
The match of the day belonged to Wyatt who was playing in his first collegiate match of the season and made a strong impression as he dominated with big serving and big forehands to win 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 4 and No. 5 singles, De Leon and Granberry were seeing their first singles appearance of 2012 and also made a good impression cruising to 7-5, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-2 wins, each respectively.
The Poets enter Spring Break with a two match winning streak and look to win their third straight as they welcome in Cornell College on Friday, March 30 beginning at 9am before traveling out to Pomona-Pitzer to take on the Sagehens in the afternoon in their first SCIAC Matchup of the season beginning at 2pm.
