SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Whittier College men's tennis team got their first test of the 2013 season when they traveled down to San Diego Saturday, February 23 to take on Point Loma Nazarene and UC San Diego.
Whittier opened up the trip with a 5-4 upset victory of Point Loma Nazarene who came in Ranked No. 7 in the West Region and No. 45 nationally in Div. II. They then followed that match with a 7-2 loss to the Tritons of UC San Diego who came in nationally ranked No. 21 in Div. II.
Match 1 (No. 45 Point Loma Nazarene – W, 5-4)
Whittier opened up play in singles first preceding a PLNU women's match that was going to take place against UC Riverside that afternoon. Point Loma came into the match ranked No. 7 in the West Region and No. 45 nationally and after singles play Whittier saw themselves all knotted up 3-3. Their wins came at No. 1 where Julian Seneviratne took down Mikey Zavlan in straight sets, No. 3 Chris Schommer who also pulled out a straight sets victory over Brooks Baldinger, and No. 6 where Samuel Farmer came from a set down to win in three sets against Kaptan Kaster 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. This was Farmer's first collegiate win.
At No. 5 singles, Andrew Hansen battled against Daniel Milliken who was a top ranked junior from Southern California but fell short in three sets losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
In doubles, the Poets needed to grab two of three to earn the upset victory and they did just that. They grabbed their first point at No. 3 doubles from Shogo Shimizu and Matthew Herron 8-4 before Seneviratne and David Konstantinov edged out the No. 1 duo of Kavelaerts/Kavelaerts 8-6 clinching the match for the Purple & Gold.
At No. 2 doubles, Schommer and Hansen found themselves in a tight matchup against Zablan and Baldinger who came in ranked No. 22 nationally in doubles but in the end the Poet duo couldn't get the break back as they fell 8-5.

Match 2 (No. 21 UC San Diego – L, 7-2)
In the Poets second matchup of the day; they took on the Tritons of UC San Diego who came in ranked No. 21 nationally in Div. II and No. 5 in the West Region. Starting off doubles action, Whittier saw Seneviratne and Konstantinov continue their success together in doubles as they cruised to the 8-2 victory at No. 1. Shimizu and Herron had an opportunity to late as they held a 7-4 advantage, which would have given the Poets a 2-1 advantage going into singles play but the duo saw the Tritons rally back to win five straight games to claim the victory 9-7.
In singles play, freshman Farmer came out ready to play at No. 6 and claimed the Poets lone point in singles marking his second straight victory as he held on to win 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 over Andrew Malozsak.
Despite rolling his ankle during the first set, Konstantinov continued to battle but fell in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 10-7, while Schommer fell upon the same result falling in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 against Rajeev Herekar.

The Purple & Gold return home to the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts when they host four teams in seven days beginning on Thursday, March 7 when they take on Div. I Villanova. During this home stand they will also take on Case Western Reserve (March 9), Swarthmore (March 12), and Haverford (March 14).
