REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College men's tennis team who was coming off of an 8-1 victory over DePauw University saw their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record drop to 1-1 after dropping a 7-2 decision to No. 11 the University of Redlands Friday afternoon.
Due to an ankle injury that freshman David Konstantinov suffered prior to the match Head Coach David Bojalad was forced to mix up his doubles and singles lineup. This caused Julian Seneviratne and the No. 12 ranked doubles team to be split up and junior Chris Schommer to be moved into the No. 1 slot for the first time this season.
This ultimately made things interesting as Andrew Hansen took on freshman partner Samuel Farmer as a partner at No. 2, while the sophomore duo of Shogo Shimizu and Matthew Herron remained the same at No. 3.
In the end all three doubles were swept putting the Poets down early 3-0. Despite the early deficit, the Poets fought back to gain two points in singles getting a straight sets win at No. 5 from Hansen who took out John Brewer 6-4, 7-5 before Herron came up big at No. 3 pulling out a third set tiebreaker over Connor Hyde 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
With the two points, the Poets did see a couple other positives within the lineup seeing Shimizu return from an ankle injury to play with little or no pain on the afternoon, while Schommer despite playing with an illness at No. 2 force a third set tiebreaker against Nick Cummings falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(4).
Whittier returns to the courts tomorrow morning when they host the Beavers of Caltech on the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts with doubles set to begin at 10am.
