Poets upset No. 31 Trinity (CT) 5-4

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Tennis team put together their biggest win on the season thus far taking out No. 31 Trinity (CT) 5-4 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.

This was Trinity's second one-point loss on the season, while Whittier improves to 4-6. 

The Purple & Gold took a 2-1 lead after doubles.  Troy Chavez (Temecula, Calif.) and Chris Palacio (El Centro, Calif.) picked up the first point winning 8-6 at No. 3 and the No. 1 duo of Andrew You (Arcadia, Calif.) and Thomas Koszowski (Denver, CO) put WC on top edging Boyd and Matingo 9-7 in one of their biggest wins on the season.

The fight continued in singles as both teams split 3-3.  You made quick work of Matingo at the top spot winning 6-2, 6-1 in just over an hour.  Palacio grabbed the fourth point at No. 5 taking out Winser 6-4, 6-3 holding a break in each set, while Elmer Van Butselaar (Veenendaal, Netherlands) would clinch the victory over Boyd at No. 3 grabbing a late break in the first to win 7-5 before rolling 6-2 in the second.

The Bantams got their three wins at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6.  The Koszowski brothers were taken out 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-3, each respectively, while Hunter Kettering (Pleasanton, Calif.) couldn't complete the comeback falling 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 at No. 4.
