SCIAC Athletes of the Week

WHITTIER, Calif. – Senior Elmer Van Butselaar (Veenendaal, Netherlands) was just named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week announced by the conference office Tuesday in the seventh week of voting.

This marks the first time in his career he has received this recognition and he is the second Poet tennis player to earn this award this year as Kindall Yeung (Fullerton, Calif.) on the women's side earned accolades back on March 12.

Van Butselaar played his last two matches on the week in impressive fashion going a perfect 4-0.  He led the Purple & Gold to a near upset of No. 34 George Fox University 5-4 and then followed that up with a lopsided 8-1 win over Chapman University.

He teamed up with sophomore Thomas Koszowski (Denver, CO) at No. 2 doubles and they held off the GFU tandem 8-6 before rolling the Panthers 8-1.  Then in singles he continued to provide a spark edging the Bruins' Alex Namba 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 before taking out Chapman's Troy Manditch 7-6 (3), 6-0 at No. 4.
