Poets continue season at first SCIAC Dual Meet
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier men's track & field team continued its season this past Saturday at the Claremont Colleges as the Poets took on Claremont-M-S and La Verne in the first SCIAC Dual Meet of the season.
Despite falling to both the Stags and Leopards, the Poets still had a number of outstanding performances.
Jonathan Grubb won the High Jump by clearing 5-feet, 11 and one-half, inches, and also finished fifth in the Pole Vault with a height on 12-feet, five and one-half, inches.
The 100-Meter Dash proved successful for the Poets as they place two runners in the Top 5. Oreese Hoyes claimed second place with a time of 11.14 while Kimble Tillman tied for fourth with an 11.37. Hoyes and Tillman also teamed in the 4x100 Meter Relay where the Poets took third.
Alex Jungsten and Zach Garrett made up the other two on the Relay as the team clocked in at 42.83.
Kevin Curbelo ran strong in the 200 Meter Dash with a second place finish in 22.13, Brad Seitz took second in the Javelin with a distance of 162-feet, five inches and Jungsten placed third in the 110 Meter Hurdles with a 15.66.
Travis Airola ran well in the distances, placing 10th in the 800 Meter Run (2:03.33) and fifth in the 1500 Meter Run (4:07.64).
Claremont-M-S defeated the Poets 121.5-35.5 and the Leopards prevailed 114-45.
The Poets return to action this weekend with the distance runners participating in the Occidental Distance Carnival on Friday evening. The rest of the squad will be back in action on Saturday in the Northridge Invitational.
