The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) announced this past week their 2012 Men’s All-Academic Awards and for the Purple & Gold they landed Goran Mataic, Kyle Catino, and Eric Bonander.

WWPA Announces 2012 Men’s Water Polo All-Academic Team
The Western Water Polo Association announced the 2012 WWPA Men’s All-Academic Teams. All told, 97 student-athletes have made the All-Academic teams for the 2012 men’s campaign.

Mataic, Rehm, Marriott named ACWPC All-Americans
The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) announced this morning their ACWPC All-Americans and Whittier saw sophomore Goran Mataic earn 1st Team recognition and senior Cameron Rehm and freshman Douglas Marriott grab Honorable Mentions honors.

Sophomore Goran Mataic (Podstrana, Croatia) was named Honorable Mention All-Western Water Polo Association and freshman Douglas Marriott (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) was named to the WWPA All-Freshman Team.

Mataic and Marriott named to All-SCIAC water polo team
After hosting the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships two weeks ago, Whittier water polo had two players selected to the All-Conference team. Sophomore center Goran Mataic and freshman utility player Douglas Marriott were named to the All-SCIAC men’s water polo first and second teams, each respectively.

In an exhilarating afternoon, the Falcons of the Air Force Academy claimed its third WWPA Championship in its program’s history since 1994 thanks to a 9-7 win over top-seeded and 2011 champion UC San Diego in the Title game of the Western Water Polo Association Championships.

All of the four top seeds including No. 1 UC San Diego, No. 2 Loyola Marymount, No. 3 Air Force, and No 4 UC Davis remained intact after the first day of the WWPA Championships bringing into Day 2 some strong match-ups including UC San Diego vs. UC Davis and Loyola Marymount vs. Air Force.

The Stags of Claremont-M-S earned their way to yet another SCIAC Men’s Water Polo Championship as they upset the No. 1 seeded Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer 16-8 at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center.

Men’s Water Polo breaks in Aquatic Center going 2-1 in home openers
For the first time in two years the Whittier College men’s water polo team was finally able to conduct a home contest in the refurbished Slade Aquatic Center as they posted a 2-1 record getting wins over Fresno Pacific and Citrus College before dropping a tight decision to Loyola Marymount.

The 2012 Whittier College men's water polo schedule was announced on Monday. The schedule opens with three home games on September 1 and features two weekend tournaments, four games against Div. I opponents, and eight SCIAC match-ups.
