LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team nearly pulled off their second upset of a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 20 Varsity program Sunday during the Inland Empire Classic falling 8-4 to No. 8 UC Irvine.
Whittier who was coming off an upset win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday came into the Inland Empire Classic where they had to take on No. 2 USC and No. 8 UC Irvine.
Game 1 (USC; L, 27-3)
Whittier opened the Classic with a tough contest with USC but got every player on the roster quality playing time as they fell 27-3 against the No. 2 ranked team in the country.
Game 2 (UC Irvine; L, 8-4)
The second match-up of the day the Poets took on No. 8 UC Irvine and gave them a tough contest falling just 8-4. The game was deadlocked at 2-2 after the first eight minutes with goals coming from Mihailo Vuja (Belgrade, Serbia) and Mirarchi.
But in the second the Anteaters would pull away scoring three unanswered from Jack Trush that moved the score to 5-2 at the break.
Mirarchi got the Poets going with a quick strike out of the half to pull the Purple & Gold within two and Marko Miocic (Great Neck, NY) would add another at the end of the frame but that's as close as Whittier would get as they would be held scoreless in the final period.
Sophomore Riley Bloom (Honolulu, HI) got the start in goal and finished with six saves.
Whittier has a home contest against Citrus College next Tuesday, September 20 beginning at 7:00pm before leaving for NOR CALS from September 23-25, hosted by UC Berkeley.
