WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team rolled past Citrus College Tuesday evening 16-11 at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center to move to 6-2 on the young season.
Citrus was the third junior college the Poets have taken on this season and for the third time dismissed them at ease.
Massimiliano Mirarchi (Rome, Italy) and Mihailo Vuja (Belgrade, Serbia) added the first two goals of the game that put Whittier on top 2-0. Tyler Fields (Norwalk, Calif.) extended the lead to 3-1 minutes later and Mirarchi capped off the frame with his second of the frame giving WC a 4-2 lead.
In the second, Citrus made a comeback outscoring the Purple & Gold 5-2 that gave them a 7-6 lead heading into the break. In the third, Julian Droetti (Irvine, Calif.) tied up the game on the Poets first possession and Mirarchi would put them on top again soon after.
This lead was short-lived as Citrus would rally with the equalizer. But that's as close as they would get as the Poets would rattle off the next five goals that closed out the period moving the score to 13-8.
In the final period, Whittier poured it on adding another three that propelled them to the lopsided victory.
Whittier leaves for NOR CALS this weekend Friday-Sunday and open up play Friday, September 23 against host UC Berkeley at 3:50pm.
