SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team suffered two losses over the weekend in Santa Barbara falling to Division I San Jose State (10-7) and No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (16-2).
With the two losses the Poets still remain over .500 at 11-9 but saw their four game winning streak snapped.
Game 1 (San Jose State; L, 10-7)
SJSU looked to avenge their earlier loss to the Purple & Gold, which they suffered 11-9 back on September 25. This time around they got after the Poets using a big fourth quarter to pull away. SJSU held onto a one goal lead after the first eight minutes of play. Both teams added two goals in the second quarter with the Spartans clinging onto the one goal lead.
Whittier mounted a comeback in the third outscoring SJSU 3-1 to pull in front 6-5 with goals from Massimiliano Mirarchi (Rome, Italy), and Julian Droetti (Irvine, Calif.). But that lead wouldn't hold as the Spartans would rally with five of their own in the fourth quarter, while holding Whittier to just one goal to pull off the victory. Mirarchi finished with four goals on the game.
Game 2 (No. 7 UC Santa Barbara; L, 16-2)
Whittier found themselves in a touch match-up with the host Gauchos. Whittier got a goal in the first and second quarters but were shutout in the second half. Goals came from Andrew Breeden (Capitola, Calif.) and Wedge Molthen (Buena Park, Calif.).
Whittier begins conference play this Wednesday, October 19 with a big Southern California intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown with Claremont-M-S beginning at 7:00pm.
