WHITTIER, Calif. – Following a tough loss to Pomona-Pitzer on the road last week, the Whittier College Men's Water Polo team bounced back in a big way Wednesday afternoon at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center as they cruised past Cal Lutheran University 16-8 to move to 2-1 in conference play.
CLU scored the first two goals of the game but that lead was short-lived as Whittier would get four unanswered that closed out the first quarter from Mihailo Vuja (Belgrade, Serbia), Marko Miocic (Great Neck, NY), Aiden Tol (Tustin, Calif.), and Tyler Fields (Norwalk, Calif.).
The Kingsmen stopped the run to open the second quarter but again the Purple & Gold would go on another run of four straight this time coming from Massimiliano Mirarchi (Rome, Italy), Hunter Pelletier (Miami, FL), and Emilio Maldonado (Chula Vista, Calif.) that helped give Whittier an 8-4 lead at the half.
Out of the half the Poets poured it on adding another six goals from six different players, while holding CLU to just two. This opened the game up 14-6, before solidifying the victory outscoring the Kingsmen 4-2 in the final eight minutes.
Pelletier and Tol each had three goals for the game, while Maldonaldo and Mirarchi registered two.
Whittier enters a four game road trip beginning with La Verne this Saturday, October 29 beginning at 11:00am.
