LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team pulled off a huge win on the road Saturday as they edged the University of La Verne 16-15 in overtime to move to 3-1 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play.
Whittier improves to 14-10 on the season and are now in a tie for second with Redlands, while La Verne drops to 4-16, 2-3 SCIAC.
Neither team could break the stalemate in the first overtime but the Purple & Gold were able to lean on junior attacker Massimiliano Mirarchi (Rome, Italy), who skipped in the eventual game winner past Leopard keeper Ian Hernandez as the shot clock wound down with 1:15 left in the period.
Mirarchi struck first in the fourth quarter that broke a 13-13 tie, but ULV came back to tie things up at 14-14 with 2:47 left to go in regulation. But the Poets responded on their next possession as Aidan Tol (Tustin, Calif.) would skip a shot past Hernandez only to see the Leopards tie things up once more that sent the game into overtime.
Freshman Murat Ersoz (Istanbul, Turkey) totaled 13 saves in between the posts. Whittier held a 6-5 advantage after the first period but saw the game tied up at 10-10 at intermission. A combined six goals were added in the third period, three coming from each team and four more would be added in the fourth.
Whittier remains on the road this Wednesday, November 2 as they travel to take on the University of Redlands beginning at 7:00pm.
