Poets land four on All-SCIAC Teams

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its All-Conference team for softball this morning and Whittier landed Denisse Martinez on 1st Team and Jessica Rosnack, Nikki Mendoza, and Jordan Learn on 2nd Team.

The Poets concluded their 2011-12 season in impressive fashion making the SCIAC Post Season Tournament for the sixth straight year and making it out of the first round for the first time in school history.  But their quest for their first SCIAC Championship was short-lived as they lost an extra-inning game to Redlands on day two.  

Whittier finishes the season with a record of 24-17, 13-11 SCIAC.

The Purple & Gold landed four players on the All-SCIAC Teams including: 

Denisse Martinez who landed on the 1st Team for third base finishing her senior season with a .310 batting average collecting 27 hits in 87 at bats that included 5 doubles, 3 homeruns, 13 runs scored and 13 runs batted in.  She finished with a slugging percentage of .471 and had an on base percentage of .459.  On April 14 and 15 she had breakout numbers against Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran where she combined for 10 hits in 16 at bats for a .625 average.  For the two series she collected six RBI's and five runs and finished with two homeruns and two doubles.

Within SCIAC play she compiled impressive numbers leading the team in on base percentage at .490 and slugging percentage at .533 and finished with three homeruns and a .396 average.     

Nikki Mendoza who collects 2nd Team All-SCIAC Honors as an outfielder for the second straight year finished the regular season as the Poet leadoff batter having the highest batting average on the team at .394.  She collected 52 hits in 132 at bats and finished with 6 doubles, 4 triples, and 2 homeruns.  She collected 27 runs and 17 runs batted in and finished with team highs in on base percentage of .470 and a slugging percentage of .545.

In the SCIAC Post Season Tournament she finished with 14 at bats and tallied 9 hits for a .642 average to go with three runs.

Within SCIAC play she compiled some of the best statistics on the team leading the team in hits with 29, stolen bases with seven, and two triples.    

Jessica Rosnack earns her first All-SCIAC nod as she grabs 2nd Team honors as a pitcher.  This season she finished with a 12-5 record in 23 appearances the most she has had in her career here at Whittier and finished with five complete games.  She finished with a 3.17 ERA and was second on the team in strikeouts with 60.  During the SCIAC Post Season Tournament she earned the win against No. 13 Redlands in the first game of the Championship going a complete game giving up one earned run on six hits.

Jordan Learn who joins the Poet squad in her first season after transferring from Southeast Missouri State collected an at large bid for 2nd Team after compiling impressive statistics on the regular season.  For the year she finished with the second highest batting average on the team at .372 and collected 32 hits which included 5 doubles and one homerun.  She also tallied 15 runs scored and 18 runs batted in and finished with a .465 slugging percentage. 

Within SCIAC play she had the highest team batting average at .444 and was second on the team in on base percentage at .490.
