WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team wrapped up their non-conference schedule Sunday as they were swept for the third time this season as they fell 6-4 and 6-5 to Williams College.
Whittier now drops to 10-12, 6-4 SCIAC and have now lost four of their last six.
Game 1: L, 6-4 (9 Innings)
Whittier and Williams each added runs in the 2nd. The Poets capitalized on an error by the third baseman as Brianna Alvarez (Montebello, Calif.) would drive in Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) who doubled to right center that led off the inning.
The Ephs tacked on another in the 4th to go in front but the poets would answer right back the very next inning as Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Wishner would both single in runs that put WC on top 3-2.
This lead would hold until the Top half of the 7th when Williams was able to add the game-tying run coming on two outs as Alvarado would double to right field scoring Pelz who walked to lead off the inning.
In extras, international rules applied with both teams starting with a runner on second base during their at bats. Williams was able to bring their first run across coming on a groundout to second base and Whittier was able to bring theirs across on a Kalei Guillermo (Aiea, HI) bunt single, which plated Madison Crimi-Demichele (San Jose, Calif.).
In the 9th, with another two outs, Williams was able to rally to bring across two more runs as Alvarado reached on an error by the left fielder allowing the go ahead run to come in, in front of Kim who would double in another to right center.
Whittier had an opportunity in the bottom half of the inning getting runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out but Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) popped up to second, Sanchez struck out and Wishner grounded out that ended the threat.
Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) threw a complete game giving up two earned runs and nine hits. Wishner finished 3-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Guillermo finished 2-3 driving in one, with Ahern going 2-4.
Game 2: L, 6-5
The second game proved tight as well. Williams got in front early with a single run in the 1st again capitalizing on an error, this time by the third baseman. They added another in the 3rd with Kim singling to left center and plated a pair in the 5th that opened the game up.
Trailing 4-0, Whittier was able to scrap to get a run back in the 5th and 6th with Alvarez grounding out to the second baseman, which allowed Guillermo to score followed by Ahern going yard with a solo shot.
This cut the deficit in half but again Williams was able to stretch their lead back to four as they tacked on another two in the 7th thanks to Murphy who hit a two run blast.
The Poets tried to play catch-up and put together a nice rally in the bottom half of the inning stringing together three runs on two hits behind singles from Ahern and Sanchez coupled with walks by Alvarez and Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.) and Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) getting hit by a pitch.
But the rally would fall short as Kaitlyn Garza (Chino Hills, Calif.) would line out into the game ending double play.
Annika Seedborg (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) picked up the loss as she drops to 5-4. She went a complete game 7.0 innings giving up four earned runs on eight hits.
Ahern finished 2-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in, while Sanchez was 1-2 with two RBI's. Garza also had a nice day at the plate going 3-4.
Whittier returns to conference play this Saturday, March 25 as they travel to take on the University of La Verne with game times set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
