ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team put together an impressive doubleheader Friday as they picked up their second sweep in conference play beating Chapman University on the road 7-1 and 5-4.

These wins move the Purple & Gold to 16-18, 12-10 SCIAC and bump them ahead of Cal Lutheran into 3rd Place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

Game 1 (W, 7-1)

The Poets jumped out in front 4-1 after the first three innings and didn't look back as they added a run in six of the seven innings.

Cat Manalo (Santa Ana, Calif.) got the Poets on the board in the 1st Inning driving a double up the middle that scored Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.) who reached earlier on a single through the left side.

Kalei Guillermo (Aiea, HI) got busy in the 2nd tripling through the left side, which brought in another and in the 4th, Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) and Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) would put the game out of reach with a solo shot and a double, each respectively.

Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) tacked on insurance in the 4th with a grounder to the shortstop, which allowed Brianna Alvarez (Montebello, Calif.) to score following a bunt single.

Then Ally Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) would put the finishing touches on the game adding a couple more in the 5th and 6th that secured the win.

Guillermo had a game going 3-4 with an RBI.  Manalo was 2-2 with a run batted in, Garza was 2-4 with an RBI, while Alvarez and Rodriguez were each 2-5 scoring once.

Annika Seedborg (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) got the start and threw a complete game 7.0 innings giving up one run on four hits, while striking out four.

Game 2 (W, 5-4)

The Poets kept the bats going in the second game but needed help in the late stages to pull off the win.  They went ahead 4-0 in the 2nd due in large part to four hits, while capitalizing on a couple errors.

Chapman came back with three of their own in the bottom half of the frame but that's as close as they would get as the eventual game winner would come across in the 3rd from Garza who singled in Dani Rozhon (Apple Valley, Calif.), which proved enough for the Poets to pull off the clean sweep.

Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.) got the start in the second game and picked up the win going 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run on seven hits.  Garza finished 2-2 with an RBI and a run batted in.  Whitney was 1-3 with two RBI's and Alvarez was 2-4 with a run scored.

Whittier returns home tomorrow, Saturday, April 22 to host Claremont-M-S in a doubleheader.  Game times are set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
