WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team ended their 2017 regular season Saturday as they split with Occidental College taking Game 1 10-2 before dropping 6-2 in the second.

Despite the split, the Poets still maintained their grasp on the No. 3 seed in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament.  They also end the regular season at 20-20, 16-12 SCIAC.

Game 1 (W, 10-2)

Following their sweep of La Verne a day prior, the Poets kept their bats going in game one of the doubleheader against the Tigers picking up a run rule with 10 runs on just eight hits.

They trailed early 2-0 after the 1st Inning but came back strong in the 2nd putting up four runs thanks to a double from Ally Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) and a triple from Brianna Alvarez (Montebello, Calif.).

They tacked on another four in the 4th that put the game out of reach.  Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.), who walked off with a two-run shot in game two against La Verne came up clutch again with a double to left that scored two.  Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) then stepped in with two outs and drove one to right that plated another two moving the score to 8-2.

Then in the 5th, the Poets put the finishing touches on the game capitalizing on an error by the second baseman where they were able to add a couple insurance tallies.

Alvarez finished going 2-3 with two runs and two runs batted in.  Whitney was 1-4 coming across once and driving in two, while Garza was 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI's.  Fonseca also had a nice game going 1-2 scoring twice and walking.

Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) picked up her first win on the season, as she went 4.0 innings coming in relief for Samantha Blum (San Jose, Calif.).  She went 4.0 innings giving up just three hits.

Game 2 (L, 6-2)

Whittier went in front early in the second game putting up two runs in the top half of the 1st.  Alvarez started the inning off with a double and then moved up to third following a groundout by Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.).  Whitney then singled to second and then moved up into scoring position following a stolen base and due to an error on the throw, Alvarez was able to come in.

After a Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) fly out, Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) stepped in and singled to center which extended the Poets lead.

This lead would hold for the next three innings until the 5th, when Oxy rallied bringing across four runs on four hits, which included two doubles from Elliott and Funaki.  Then in the 6th, the Tigers would add insurance with Elliott doubling to left and that would be enough as Oxy would hold on for the four run victory salvaging the split.

Whittier gathered 12 hits on the afternoon with Alvarez, Kalei Guillermo (Aiea, HI) and Whitney each going 2-3.  Annika Seedborg (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.) picked up the loss after going 5.0 innings giving up four runs on six hits.

Whittier enters the SCIAC Post Season Tournament, which will begin this Friday, May 5 hosted by the University of La Verne who is the top seed.  Whittier will open with the No. 2 seed Claremont-M-S.  Further information for the tournament will be released this week.
