WHITTIER, Calif. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association came out with its annual Easton/NFCA All-Academic Teams on Monday. The 2016-17 Whittier College Softball team was awarded the No. 122 spot in the 125-team list of all Division III teams in the nation.
The rankings recognize those schools that exemplify top academic standards across seven membership divisions. The Poets earned a cumulative GPA of 3.12 in the 2016-17 academic school year, earning them a spot in the top-125 of Division III schools. Eight members of the team were also named to the SCIAC All-Academic Team, which means they earned a GPA of 3.4 or above in the previous school year.
Upper Iowa University (NCAA Division II) posted the top college GPA with a 3.813, while Byron Nelson (Texas) High School (4.916), for the fourth consecutive year, and Trenton (Mich.) High School (3.858), led the high school weighted and unweighted categories, respectively.
The rankings recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across seven membership divisions. Garnering the highest GPA in the other college divisions were Western Carolina University (NCAA Division I - 3.673), Newberry College (NCAA Division III - 3.675), Siena Heights University (NAIA - 3.780) and College of Southern Idaho (Junior College – 3.686). It marked the second straight year for Newberry and Siena Heights, while Southern Idaho returns to No. 1, a spot it held in 2014-15.
Leading the SCIAC was the Redlands softball team with a collective GPA of 3.404. Pomona-Pitzer followed with a team GPA of 3.39, just ahead of La Verne (3.37) and Chapman (3.368). The Cal Lutheran and Whittier softball squads rounded out the list which included 125 NCAA Division III institutions with respective GPAs of 3.29 and 3.12.
