WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team completed their weekend Sunday afternoon at Palmer Field pulling off the sweep of Western Connecticut State 8-1 and 3-1.
With the sweep the Purple & Gold improve to 8-7-1, 2-4 SCIAC and have won six of their last nine.
Game 1 (W, 8-1)
This was the first game on the season for the Colonials and they faced a tough Poet squad. Whittier took over quickly and added all eight runs over the first five innings. They capitalized on three Colonial miscues in the first inning that led to two runs. They added another two the very next inning moving the score to 4-0. Alli Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) drew a walk and Hannah Angileri (San Jose, Calif.) laid down a bunt single that loaded the bases. After two quick outs soon after Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) drew a walk that brought in one and Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) followed with a single to the shortstop that provided another.
Whittier continued to add to their lead in the 3rd as Wishner would go deep to left for her second homerun of her career. Western Connecticut State got one back in the 4th to cut the deficit to five but it wasn't enough as Ahern would add a sacrifice fly in the 4th followed by a Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) pinch hit solo shot in the 5th that secured the win.
Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) threw a complete game giving up just one run on seven hits, while striking out five en route to picking up her first win on the season.
Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) finished 1-2 for the game with two runs scored and two walks. Ahern was 1-2 with a run scored and two runs batted in and Sanchez was 1-4 scoring once and driving in two.
Game 2 (W, 3-1)
The second game of the doubleheader was a low scoring affair. Whittier added all three runs in the 2nd and 3rd and that proved enough in the victory. They put up two runs on two hits and used an error to go on top. Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) started things off with a single up the middle and Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) followed reaching first on an error by the pitcher. Fonseca then stepped in with a single to right that scored one and Angileri would then drive in another two batters later on a fielder's choice.
Another fielder's choice in the 3rd would bring across another run for the Purple & Gold as Attaway would drive in Heal would drew a leadoff walk.
The Colonials would get one back in the 4th to pull within two but over the final three innings they would get shut down by Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) who gave up a hit, while picking up her fourth win on the season.
Attaway finished 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Fonseca was 1-3 with a run batted in and Ahern was 1-3.
Whittier remains at home this Saturday, March 17 when they welcome in Cal Lutheran University with game times set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
