LOS ANGELES, Calif. – It was pouring rain, there were puddles on the track, and the race started after 10:00 PM, but that didn't stop the group of 10k runners on Saturday night during the Oxy Distance Carnival.
Jessica Iribe (Buena Park, Calif.) ran a 36:12.80 to finish as the top women's collegiate runner and the new school record holder for the Poets. Julissa Tobias (Norwalk, Calif.) also scored a PR, running 36:52.05 and solidifying her 3rd all-time mark by more than a minute.
Julian Sandoval (El Monte, Calif.) finished second overall in his first ever 10k to run 31:00.66 and break Juan Rodriguez's 1999 school record. Teammate Benjamin White (Whittier, Calif.) ran 32:07.87 and enters the 10k all-time list at 6th. Freshman David Del Carmen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also debuted in the 10k, his time would have landed him on the top-ten list if not for his teammates finishing before him—his time is the 11th fastest in school history.
Other notable performances were freshman Caitlin Greenup (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) in the triple jump. She hopped, skipped, and jumped to a new collegiate personal best of 34 feet 4.75 inches and now sits 2nd all-time. Freshman Garrett Silva (Whittier, Calif.) jumped 14 feet 5.35 inches in the rain to stay consistent on the year. Lastly, two separate men's 4x400 meter relays ran faster than any time this year with a team of Jay Smith (Bellflower, Calif.), Gabriel Pridgen-Daniels (Sacramento, Calif.), Hakim Williams Jr. (Riverside, Calif.), and Ray Ray Roberson (Albuquerque, NM) running 3:27.63 and a team of Eli Bedford (Los Angeles, Calif.), KamRon Perry (San Jose, Calif.), Robert Marquez Jr. (West Covina, Calif.), and Michael Badillo (Brea, Calif.) going 3:28.53.
The Track & Field teams return to competition when they host SCIAC No. 2 on Saturday, March 31. The meet will occur on the campus of Whittier College on the newly renovated Aubrey Bonham Track. The first meet hosted on campus in the past ten years.
