WHITTIER, Calif. – A small contingent of distance runners and pole vaulters from the Whittier College Track & Field teams took part in the Mt. SAC Relays and the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions this past weekend.
Three distance runners led the Purple & Gold putting together record-breaking performances. Julissa Tobias (Norwalk, Calif.) led the trio as the lone Poet to take part in the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. She was among a field of elite athletes from Division I, Division II, Division III, and NAIA. She took part in the 5000m and finished 14th overall with a time of 17:00.79, breaking her own Whittier College school record from 2017. She currently ranks 14th in Division III for the 5000m and 16th for the 10000m.
Across the way at the Azusa Pacific Meet of Champions, Jessica Iribe (Buena Park, Calif.) and Benjamin White (Whittier, Calif.) had strong performances. White, who is in his freshman campaign faced off against the top competition from the upper Divisions placing 6th overall in the 5000m. With his time of 14:59.93, he now ran the 5th fastest 5000m time in Whittier College school history, ranking him No. 1 All-Time among Whittier College Track & Field freshmen.
Iribe took part in the 5000m as well during the Meet of Champions and despite a tough field with Division I scholarship athletes she still managed to finish 3rd overall with a time of 17:31.65. Her performance now ranks her No. 3 All-Time at Whittier College, and currently sits No. 11 in the Division III National Rankings for the 10000m.
Whittier returns to competition this weekend, Friday-Saturday, April 27-28 when they take part in the SCIAC Championships. The Prelims will take place tomorrow and the finals on Saturday. The two-day event will take place on the campus of the University of Redlands.
