WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's basketball team got underway with their 2011-12 season but were no match for the Eagles of Biola University as they lost 82-32 Tuesday evening.

Whittier who was coming off of an exhibition contest against UC Merced was anxious to start their season but Biola who came in with a 2-1 record losing their previous game to Lewis & Clark Idaho State controlled the paint and the tempo of the game as they outrebounded the Poets 64-30, while recording 38 points within the paint.

The Purple and Gold who have a lot of new faces on their team, showed they have depth and a balanced attack as they received 17 points from their bench from seven different players.  Senior Brittany Aranda paced the Poets with eight points and three rebounds on 4-12 shooting.

Junior Alex Coon, who hails from Alaska chipped in with seven points and three rebounds.  Freshman, Emma Teyecha who comes from La Serna H.S. came off the bench and led the bench players with four points, while sophomore Danielle Hays totaled three points and five rebounds.

Not to be overlooked was the play of freshman Dannika Navales-Lugtu who came in at the point guard position to total four steals, five rebounds, and four assists.

With this strong bench play, Coach Brad Durchslag looks to add more experience to his roster before entering SCIAC play and looks to bounce back after this game to take on Pacific Union on November 18 starting at 1pm and then playing Cal St. Maritime on November 19 starting at 3pm before returning home to take on Linfield in the home opener on Wednesday November 23 beginning at 4pm.
