SANTA CRUZ, Calif. –The Whittier College women's basketball team dropped their second straight game in Day 2 of the UC Santa Cruz Invite to Menlo 73-49 despite a strong performance from junior Alex Coon.

Whittier now drops to 1-5 and are still seeking their first road win of the season.  The Poets again received a strong performance from Coon who finished with 11 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while also hauling in seven boards.  On the season she is averaging 14.0 ppg and is shooting 48% from the field and has been a strong component of the Poet squad.

Freshman Dannika Navales-Lugtu again played strong minutes for the Poets, as she tossed in 10 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.

In the first half, Whittier jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but saw that lead fade away as Menlo took their first lead of the contest at 10-8.  From there the game remained close throughout the half until Menlo pulled away to 33-18 with just under two minutes remaining.  The Purple and Gold did however come back and got within 10 but that's as close as they would get as Menlo went into the break up 39-24.

Coming out of intermission, Whittier's Brittany Aranda knocked in two of her eight points for the contest and Danielle Hays came off the bench to chip in six points but it wasn't enough as Menlo rolled to the 24 point victory. Danielle Quinones who comes in as a point guard, played big minutes inside despite her small frame and grabbed a team high eight rebounds to go with four points.

Whittier was outrebounded 49-44 and turned the ball over 21 times that ended up being the difference in the loss.  The Purple and Gold look to bounce back as they return home to begin preparing for six straight home contests beginning with Lewis & Clark (Ore.) on Sunday, December 18 beginning at 3pm and ending with the SCIAC opener against the Regals of Cal Lutheran University on January 5, beginning at 7:30pm.
