WHITTIER, Calif. – It was a tough road match-up Wednesday night for the Whittier College Women's Basketball team as they fell 85-71 to Pomona-Pitzer.
Whittier has now given up 85 points in back to back contests as they now drop six in a row moving to 5-7, 2-3 SCIAC.
A combined 36 points were scored in the first quarter with PP holding the edge 20-16. In the second, Whittier added another 16 points but saw the Sagehens stretch their lead to 11 at the break as they put up 23. In the third the Sagehens started pulling away grabbing a lead as many as 25 and in the fourth despite outscoring PP 26-17, it wouldn't be enough to complete the comeback as Whittier would fall by 14.
Whittier didn't have an answer for the Sagehens from behind the arc as they shot 55% from three-point territory (16-for-29). Whittier shot 45.9% from the field and 31% from three-point territory. Pomona-Pitzer held the edge 33-29 on rebounds but saw WC win the battle in the paint 28-22.
Teani White (Burbank, Calif.) and Mia Maglinte (Roseville, Calif.) were the lone starters in double figures each adding 13 points apiece. White also totaled five boards. Off the bench, Zaria Branch (San Diego, Calif.) went off for a season high 15 points with three boards, three assists and three steals playing 22 minutes and Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) chipped in with seven points with a pair of steals.
Whittier returns home this Saturday, January 12 for a match-up with Caltech. Tip-off set for 5:00pm.
