SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Golf team had a tough task over the weekend within the first SCIAC Tournament. They placed 4th overall with a two-day total of 665 (334-331) as the tough conditions of Arrowhead Country Club proved difficult for the Purple & Gold.
It was a tight race following day one action with the Poets trailing Cal Lutheran by a stroke and Pomona-Pitzer by four. But on day two, they couldn't catch them as they finished 4th overall. Claremont-M-S won the team title with a 619 (311-308), Pomona-Pitzer took 2nd with a 637 (330-307), and Cal Lutheran took 3rd with a 663 (333-330).
Whittier did however pull off wins over four teams, which included Chapman University (5th – 676), Uni. of Redlands (6th – 686), Occidental College (7th – 695), and the Uni. of La Verne.
Junior Kajal Vitha (Whittier, Calif.) was the most consistent for Whittier over the two days finishing in a tie for 10th. She went 80-80 (+19). Sophomore Taylor Beckwith (Turlock, Calif.) had a big dip after day one, shooting a 79 putting her within the Top 5 but dropped nine spots following play on day two after shooting an 84.
Freshman Kainani Ho (Waipahu, HI) had a strong appearance in her first conference tournament. She shot an 89 on Day 1 but bounced back to shoot the second lowest individual score for the team with an 81, which placed her in a tie for 22nd.
Madison Crimi-Demichele (San Jose, Calif.) had a tough two day stretch going 86-90, which placed her in a tie for 29th. Ciara Clark (Henderson, NV) was 31st with an 89-88 and Kamryn Marie Garcia (La Mirada, Calif.) rounded out the Poet scorers with a 92-86.
Whittier returns to the links on March 17-18 when they take part in the George Fox Westbrook Invite, which will take place at Westbrook Village Golf Club in Peoria, AZ.
