Cirbo named second-team All-West Region
WHITTIER, Calif. - The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced its 2009 All-Region teams Thursday, May 21, and the Poets were honored with their first-ever selection as sophomore Amy Cirbo garnered a spot on the second-team.
Cirbo was one of four defenders selected to the second-team and one of six student-athletes from the Southern California area to make the first or second-team.
The Centennial, Colo., native played in and started all 14 games for the Poets and helped the team to its best season in NCAA history. The 8-6 record by Whittier was the most wins, and first winning season, since the program joined the NCAA prior to the start of the 2000 campaign.
Cirbo was one of the top defenders for the purple and gold all season. She ranked fourth on the team with four caused turnovers, ranked third on the team with 30 ground balls and was second on the squad with 26 draw controls.
She had a season-high five draws on April 15 in a 20-9 win over Pomona-Pitzer and on three separate occasions had four draw in a game.
Cirbo also added three goals.
In all 32 student-athletes are selected to either the first or second-team in each Region and a total of 224 Division III players were honored. Claremont-M-S placed three on the All-Region while Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands each had one selection.
