Whittier drops nail biter to Claremont-M-S 20-15

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's lacrosse team for the second straight time have lost a nail biter to the Athena's of Claremont-M-S falling 20-16 Wednesday evening.
Whittier now drops to 4-10, 0-6 SCIAC and continue to seek their first SCIAC victory of the season, while Claremont-M-S remains in third place in the SCIAC standings at 8-7, 4-2 SCIAC.
The previous time these two teams met back on February 15 Whittier was on the losing end of a 14-11 loss and for the second straight time they have lost by less than five goals.
The Athena's got the scoring started with three unanswered in the first five minutes of play until Whittier's Brooke Winslow stopped the Whittier drought at the 5:18 mark as she was found streaking across the middle from Dana Barraco.
But CMS added another three unanswered capped off by back to back goals from Rachel Darby.
Whittier wouldn't go away though as Barraco and Winslow teamed up together to add back to back goals themselves that pulled them within three at 6-3.
But another 3-0 run by CMS again pushed the Athena lead back to six until Barraco found the back of the goal for her second goal of the game. In the final nine minutes of play Whittier and CMS swapped goals capped off by a Winslow unassisted goal that pulled the Poets within six at 12-6 heading into the half.
Coming out of the break Whittier went on a 3-1 run out of the half from Raquel Damti, Shaina Denny, and Lily Baxter that pulled the Poets within four at 13-9 until Christina Khavarian stopped the bleeding with a goal in the 33rd minute.
After an Amiya Moretta goal CMS' Ali Abravomitz and Erin Chavanne added back to back goals that pushed the Athena lead to 16-10 until Whittier went on a 3-0 run themselves sparked by Barraco who added two, while Damti added an unassisted goal that again pulled the Poets within three with just under seven minutes remaining.
But again the Athena's responded and added a 3-0 run for themselves to again push their lead back to six. In the final two minutes of play Whittier added two goals from Winslow and Barraco that pulled them within four but it wasn't enough as Claremont-M-S held on for the five goal victory after grabbing the last draw control that sealed the victory.
Whittier was led on offense by Barraco who finished with five goals on seven shots to go with two assists both season highs, and one caused turnover.
Winslow had a season and career high in goals with four on six shots, while Damti recorded two goals and two ground balls.
The Poets return to action as they take part in their final regular season home game this Saturday, April 14 against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 11:30am where they will recognize their lone senior Marlee Moffatt.
