Poets drop 5-0 decision to the Athena’s

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team continues to search for their first win of the season as they fell to Claremont-M-S 5-0. The Poets now run their overall record to 0-7 while the Athena's run theirs to 3-2-2.
The Athena's scored its first goal in the 24th minute and then tacked on a second goal 29 seconds later as Michele Barnhill connected on a score from 35 yards out.
Whittier's first good look at goal came from the head of senior Megan Wessel who received a beautiful cross from Allison Calabrese and she then attempted to head the ball into the corner of the goal but goalie Hannah Dunham made a diving stop.
The Poets continued to be aggressive as scoring opportunities presented itself. Anna Edwards and Calabrese had good looks on goal in the 30th minute but were unable to find the back of the net. Danielle Kwasniowski seven minutes later then took a shot in front of the goal but it was blocked.
Going into the half, Claremont-M-S led 2-0 outshooting the Poets 8-4.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Claremont-M-S tacked on their third goal of the game from Madi Shove. Immediately following the goal, the Poets put a plethora of shots on goal from Chelsea Irha, Calabrese and Madison Shipherd who all continued to play aggressively in the second half.
Then in the 72nd minute the Athena's tacked on their fourth goal and two minutes later Shaundra Ullman received a cross from Lauren Phillips to put away Claremont's fifth and final goal of the game.
Shipherd and Calabrese led the purple and gold in shots for the game as they each took two apiece, while Shanna Falch was in goal for the Poets and collected three saves.
Whittier looks to bounce back as they travel to take on the Regals of Cal Lutheran University Wednesday, September 28, beginning at 7:30pm.
