WHITTIER, Calif. – For the third straight game the Whittier College Women's Soccer team has suffered a loss by a goal as they fell 1-0 to Occidental College at Memorial Stadium.
Each loss has come in the final 5:00 of the game, with two of three coming in overtime.
Saturday night's loss was no different as the Purple & Gold saw an unlucky strike come from Nicole Castro in the 85th minute that propelled the Tigers to the road victory. She juggled a ball just inside the box and made a quick turn and connection, which sailed over the hand of Lyla Matar (Glendale, Calif.).
Whittier (5-6, 2-6 SCIAC) pelted the goal all night outshooting Occidental 17-11 but was edged 3-2 on corner kicks. Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) led the offense with five shots, while Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) added four with three being on frame.
Kai started the offense in the 5th minute taking a strike against Tiger goalie Dallas Gunny but she would get denied. Yzabal then had a great look on goal at the 20:44 mark when she hit the side post as she bent a shot past a diving Gunny.
The shots continued in the second half for the Poets as Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and Kai put two balls on mark but they both were denied by Sydney Tomlinson, who subbed in the second half.
The last chance for the Purple & Gold came in the 88th minute from Yzabal who had a look from just outside the box following a foul from Oxy. But again she couldn't hit as her shot would sail high allowing the Tigers to come away with the 1-0 win.
Matar played in goal and finished with five saves.
Whittier has a short turn around as they host Caltech tomorrow, Monday, October 9 beginning at 7:00pm. This is the inaugural season of women's soccer for Caltech and they come to Whittier for Staff Appreciation Night where Dr. Sean Morris, Dr. Trish Van Ooosbree, and Jose Flores will be recognized.
