WHITTIER, Calif. – A late goal by freshman Jazmin Gomez (Norwalk, Calif.) propelled the Whittier College Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory Monday night over the Beavers of Caltech.
Caltech is in their inaugural season and were coming off a win over Shepard College. They managed to find the back of the goal early in the second half but the balanced offensive attack by the Purple & Gold was too much to handle.
Prior to the game the Poets recognized three faculty members who have supported them both on and off the field and were guest coaches for the evening. These professors included Dr. Sean Morris (English), Dr. Trish Van Oosbree (Kinesiology & Nutrition Science), and Jose Flores (Spanish).
The Purple & Gold were tested all evening by the Beavers as the game remained scoreless at the break with a combined 10 shots being taken. Gomez had the first look on goal for WC in the 19th minute as she got past a couple defenders but her strike would be right at the Beaver goalie Kali Drango.
Later in the half, Caltech had their first opportunity coming from Krystin Brown who was able to take a strike from just outside the box only to hit the crossbar.
In the second half, Lyla Matar (Glendale, Calif.) was swapped out in goal for Stella Thermos (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Matar made her presence felt in the midfield. She would find the go ahead goal :40 seconds in from long range that floated just under the crossbar and over an outstretched hand of Drango.
Minutes later, Gomez got into the action taking four shots with three being on frame but again Drango came up big denying all of them. In the 62nd minute, Caltech would find the equalizer as Brown would split two defenders with a through ball that found Netra Ravishankar in the box, which she would put away.
Soon after the Poets forced the issue continuing to bombard the goal with 11 shots. Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) had a look for the go-ahead connection in the 69th minute. After a free kick from the far side, she was waiting back post and put a left on it trying to go near post but Drango was there to punch the ball out.
A minute later Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) saw her chance come up this time on a corner kick. Clarissa Field (Whittier, Calif.) put a nice ball in the box for a waiting Yzabal but her ensuing strike would hit the post and rebound out, eventually to be cleared.
After three more shots, the Poets finally were able to find the back of the net for the game-winner. Andrea Aldama (Gardena, Calif.) served in a long ball from the far side and found Gomez waiting back post, which she put away for her fourth of the season.
Whittier outshot Caltech 25-7 and held the advantage on corner kicks at 12-3. Thermos picked up her sixth win on the season finishing with a save. Gomez led the offense finishing with seven shots with four being on goal, while Kanoe Morihara (Mililani, HI) added seven herself.
Whittier (6-6, 2-6 SCIAC) travels now for two games beginning with Redlands tomorrow, Wednesday, October 11 with game time set for 7:00pm.
