REDLANDS, Calif. – Two first half goals proved enough for a win Wednesday evening as the Whittier College Women's Soccer team shutout the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands 2-0 at Farquhar Field.

It was Breast Cancer Awareness Night as well as Whittier improved to 7-6, 3-6 SCIAC.  The Purple & Gold avenged an earlier loss to UR 2-1 back on September 16 and remain in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post-Season contention.

Whittier tested Bulldog keeper Hannah Menk early with back to back strikes within seconds of each other from Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) and Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.).  But both were turned away by Menk keeping the game scoreless.

The defensive unit for the Poets stood strong soon after led by Jenna Muise (Chino Hills, Calif.), Ashley Gonzalez (Whittier, Calif.), and Andrea Aldama (Gardena, Calif.) blocking three shots by the Bulldogs, while Lyla Matar (Glendale, Calif.) would notch her first save of the evening.  But the response by WC was quick netting two goals within two minutes of each other on their next two possessions, which proved enough in the win.

The first goal coming off the foot of Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) who put away a ball in the box following a scramble in front of the goal.  The insurance goal came from Kolek who took a strike from 40 yards out to the upper 90.

The Bulldogs had a couple opportunities in the second half with the best look coming in the 89th minute when Erin Schlosser rocketed a set piece from 30 yards out.  But Matar was able to leap up and punch the ball over the crossbar, which preserved the shutout.

Whittier was outshot 14-13 on the evening but held the advantage on corner kicks at 4-3.  Matar picked up the win in goal finishing with three saves.  Kai and Kolek led the offense each taking three shots apiece, while Yzabal and Jazmin Gomez (Norwalk, Calif.) each recorded two.

Whittier remains on the road this Saturday, October 14 as they travel to take on Chapman University beginning at 11:00am.
