WHITTIER, Calif. – For the third time this season the Poets have played to a draw as they played 110:00 minutes of scoreless soccer against Pomona-Pitzer inside of Memorial Stadium.
Out of the three ties the Purple & Gold have had on the season, two of them have been scoreless. They move to 3-2-3, 2-2-2 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 6-1-1, 3-1-1 SCIAC.
Whittier was limited on offense to just five shots with just one being on goal, which came from Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) in the first half at the 30:21 mark, which would be turned away by Sagehen keeper Isa Berardo.
Mikaela Malsy (Westminster, Calif.) had an opportunity soon after but her strike would go wide keeping the game scoreless at the break.
In the second half the Poets gathered two looks both coming from Yzabal but again her shots would go high and wide keeping WC off the scoreboard.
In extra time, Pomona provided the pressure outshooting Whittier 8-0, while gathering three corner kicks. But again the Poet defensive unit stood strong forcing the game into a deadlock.
Freshman Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) had the game of her collegiate career thus far turning away 13 shots between the posts en route to grabbing her second tie on the season and her second shutout.
Whittier's next game is on the road this Wednesday, September 26 as they take on Cal Lutheran University beginning at 7:00pm.
