VENTURA, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team wrapped up the Ojai Tennis Championships this past weekend in impressive fashion finishing with a strong doubles performance.
Sophomore Chloe Dredge led the charge in singles despite not pulling out her first round match she pushed Cal State LA's Larn McShane to three sets taking the first 6-3 but dropping the second and third 6-2, 10-4.
Sophomore Liliana Serylo also competed in the Independent singles draw and fell to Pacific University's Megan Yoshimoto 6-4, 7-5, while Adrienne Hamada wrapped up the other singles players falling to Amal Ben el Hadj from the Academy of Art 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles play Whittier had two teams reach the Round of 16 putting on the best performances for the Poets in the Championships. Freshman Benay Weintraub and senior Kady Oliker made it through their first two rounds beating Karlie Foerstel and Abby Zaretsky from the Masters College 6-4, 6-4 and Rebecca Roeser and Jasmin Zaragoza from Hope International 6-1, 6-1 before falling in the round of 16 6-2, 6-1 to Christie Lau and Larn McShane the No. 1 overall seed from Cal State LA.
Whittier's other doubles team of Maryrose Vigorita and Lauren Gelgur made it to the Round of 16 but didn't play a match until that round due to being awarded a bye in the first and then having their opponents withdraw in the round of 32. In the round of 16 they faced Ulrike Hahn and Kristin Yep from Concordia and fought but gave up a break of serve in each set to fall 6-3, 6-3.
Whittier wraps up their 2011-12 season as the take part in the SCIAC Championships beginning tomorrow, May 4 as they take on the University of Redlands beginning at 10:00am at Cal State Northridge.
