WHITTIER, Calif. – It was announced last week that the Whittier College Poets men's tennis team landed among the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason rankings at No. 26 for all NCAA Division III programs.
In addition, the Poets learned of their position among the West Region, sitting eighth, which is one behind Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe the University of Redlands.
Senior Julian Seneviratne (Marietta, GA) heads up the returning Poets after going 13-8 last year. He competes at the top spot for the Poets and the 1st Team All-SCIAC performer looks forward to entering the 2013 campaign among the West Region's Top 25 individuals. He also helps to solidify Whittier's doubles duos as he teams up with freshman David Konstantinov ranking 12th in the country and 4th in the West Region.
In addition the Poets welcome back 2nd Team All-SCIAC Selection, junior Chris Schommer, as a viable contender in singles and doubles as he comes in ranked No. 18 in the West Region.
Whittier looks forward to facing a spring schedule that's full of ranked opponents, including four of the top 15 and seven among the nation's best. Included in the schedule is another trip down to San Diego where the Purple & Gold will take on Point Loma Nazarene and Div. II UC San Diego before returning back to the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts to host Villanova.
On the women's side, freshman Meagan Zamilpa led the pre-season rankings after a sensational run in the ITA West Regionals with a semi-final appearance in singles by entering the 2013 season with a West Regional Ranking of No. 8 jump starting her freshman campaign.
