Poets sweep Pacific Lutheran and Mills College

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team wrapped up their Sunday afternoon sweeping both Pacific Lutheran and Mills College giving up just one game on the day improving their record to 6-3.   

Match #1 (Pacific Lutheran – W, 8-1)

In the first match of the afternoon the Poets took on the Pacific Lutheran Lutes and controlled the match from start to finish.  The Poets jumped out in front in doubles taking two of three winning 8-4 at No. 1 and 8-2 at No. 2 before coming out in singles sweeping all six singles spots.

At one point in singles the Poets were all leading 3-0 before sweeping the match in straight sets.  Maegan Zamilpa led the charge winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and was followed by Adrienne Hamada who cruised to the 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3.

Lauren Gelgur clinched the match for the Purple & Gold at No. 6 dropping just two games winning 6-0, 6-2.

Despite seeing Liliana Serylo, Benay Weintraub, and Bree Campanero hold on for 7-5 victories in their respective first sets the Poets managed to come out of the gates hot in the second sets winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, each respectively.

1. Meagan, Zamilpa (WC) def. LUND, Samantha (PL) 6-0, 6-0

2. Liliana, Serylo (WC) def. NEWELL, Leah (PL) 7-5, 6-3

3. Adrienne, Hamada (WC) def. McGRIFF, Payton (PL) 6-0, 6-1

4. Benay, Weintraub (WC) def. AARSVOLD, Tina (PL) 7-5, 6-3

5. Brianna, Campanero (WC) def. MIOLLA, Catherine (PL) 7-5, 6-1

6. Lauren Gelgur (WC) def. McCLURE, Allison (PL) 6-0, 6-2

Match #2 (Mills College – W, 9-0)

In the second match of the afternoon the Poets saw themselves untested against Mills College as they dropped a combined four games in both doubles and singles to win 9-0.

The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams cruised quickly to the 8-0 sweeps before the No. 3 team of Gelgur and Campanero finished off with an 8-1 win at No. 3.

But the Poets didn't stop there as they won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 singles, while No. 2 and No. 6 dropped just a mere three games combined.
