Poets cruise to 8-1 victory over Willamette

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's tennis team has now won three of their last four matches after cruising past the Bearcats of Willamette University 8-1 Tuesday afternoon to improve to 7-4 on the season.

The Poets who have earned 8-1 and 9-0 victories over Pacific Lutheran and Mills was once again untested as they won two of three doubles before sweeping singles play.

The No. 2 team of Benay Weintraub and Adrienne Hamada led the Poet charge winning 8-0 before the No. 3 team of Lauren Gelgur and Bree Campanero followed with an 8-2 victory.  The lone loss came at No. 1 when Maegan Zamilpa and Liliana Serylo dropped a tough 8-5 decision to Sabrina Guttierez and Denise Poltavski.

Despite the loss in doubles the Poets bounced back to sweep singles giving up a combined 11 games all coming in straight sets that propelled them to the 8-1 victory.  Junior Hamada continues to pace the Poets as she won her ninth contest winning 6-0, 6-2 now improving to 9-1 in singles play, while moving to 8-2 in doubles.          

The Poets return to the courts this weekend when they host the Bulldogs of the University Redlands on Friday, March 29 with doubles set to begin at 2:00pm.
