OJAI, Calif. – Freshman Meagan Zamilpa once again led the women's tennis team but this time in the Ojai Tennis Championships as she won two rounds in singles to pace the Purple & Gold.
Zamilpa came into Ojai seeded No. 4 in singles and cruised past her first round opponent Alisha Hansen from Biola 6-0, 6-0 before taking her second round in three sets over Monica Li from Caltech 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. But in the quarterfinals she was matched up against Chloe Dobbert from Claremont-M-S who pulled off the upset victory winning 6-2, 7-5 ending the freshman's run.
Junior Adrienne Hamada was in the same half of the draw as Zamilpa and actually took on Dobbert in the first round but came up short falling in three sets after taking the first 6-3.
Liliana Serylo was the other Poet who played in singles but was unable to get out of the first round as well as she fell 6-3, 6-1 to No. 3 Andrea Madrigal from La Verne.
In doubles senior Lauren Gelgur and junior Bree Campanero led the duos winning their opening round 6-4, 6-3 over Casey Honath and Phoebe Minette from Mills College before falling 6-1, 6-0 to No. 3 Samantha Chao and Kara Wang from Pomona-Pitzer.
The last doubles team consisting of Hamada and Benay Weintraub got unlucky in their first round matchup against Jamie Solomon and Marie Fleming who were seeded No. 7 but they put up a fight falling in straights 6-4, 6-4.
The Poets return home and now begin preparing for the SCIAC Championships next weekend on May 3 & 4 where they will take on La Verne in the opening round looking to avenge their earlier regular season 6-3 loss.
