VENTURA, Calif. – Sophomore Amanda Rodriguez (Glendora, Calif.) led the Whittier College Women's Tennis team during the Ojai Championships over the weekend.
Over the three days, she was able to battle to the semi-finals of the consolation singles bracket, while teaming up with junior Kindall Yeung (Fullerton, Calif.) in doubles earning a spot in the Division III Doubles bracket semi-finals.
Rodriguez had a tough opening match with Cal Lutheran's Christie Kurdys who sat as the No. 7 seed. Rodriguez pushed her though winning the first set 6-4 and then led 5-2 in the second but couldn't clinch it as Kurdy's would storm back to take the second set 7-5 before rolling to the 6-1 third set clinch.
With the loss Rodriguez made her way into the consolation draw and there she did damage, beating Jada Moore (Cal Lutheran) 6-0, 6-2, and then Isabelle Brown (UC Santa Cruz) 6-3, 6-4 before falling to Annette Sousa (Cal Lutheran) in a semi-final three-set thriller 6-0, 2-6, 14-12.
Yeung went a different route in the Championships beating her first round opponent in Jane Wright (Occidental) 6-4, 6-4 before falling in the Round of 16 to the No. 4 seed Ashley Isaac (UC Santa Cruz) 6-2, 6-1.
After singles the duo put together a nice run in the doubles section of the Championships. They came in seeded No. 4 and they had to battle going the distance in their first two matches. They held off Julia Reisler/Erin Wang (Caltech) 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 before taking out Nicole Neumann/Annette Sousa (Cal Lutheran) 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. But in the semi-finals they ran into the top seeded duo of Mary Cardone/Anna Schneemann (Southwestern) falling 6-1, 6-1.
