REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College women's track & field team completed Day 1 of the SCIAC Championships in impressive fashion in their strongest performance of the year setting the tone for the rest of the weekend.
The scoring got started by junior Alyssa Sialaris in the hammer as she won with a PR and new record of 160' 0". Claudia Munoz also did well with a PR of 106' 0". Mary Brzezinski took 9th in the long jump with a mark of 14' 7.75".
Molly Litherland then took her turn as she advanced to the finals in the 800m with a controlled race of 2:22.81 followed by Nicole Leon who PR'd in the 400m with a time of 61.82 to advance to the finals. She was followed by Carolyn Newswanger in the 100m who had a qualifying final time of 12.89.
Sialaris then came back in the discus to win a tight competition with a throw of 141' 9" to become a two time conference champion. Newswanger then ran a solid race in the 200m with a time of 26.98 but it wasn't good enough to get her to the finals. Just as with the men the 3000SC was the closer of the meet Eva Aguilar and she did not disappoint as she raced to a 5th place finish with a time of 11:28.27.
On Day 2 of the championships the Poets have a plethora of athletes competing with big possibilities for making names for themselves in the Whittier College record books.
